«Superga is the most enchanting position in the world» stated Le Corbusier during a visit to Turin, but the words of the Swiss architect and urban planner are not the only ones that exalt Superga: in the eighteenth century the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who had come to Superga for the first time, exclaimed full of enthusiasm after looking at the landscape of the snow-covered Alps «I have before me the most beautiful sight that can strike the human eye». Furthermore, the writer Edmondo De Amicis wrote: «The landscape of the Superga hill is bigger and more beautiful than its fame» and even Pope Pius XII defined it as «the most beautiful landscape in Europe».
Superga is undoubtedly an unrivalled place and can be reached by a rack tramway, whose features are unique.

On the 27th of April 2014 the Sassi-Superga Rack Tramway, work of ingenuity of the engineer Tommaso Agudio, celebrated its 130th anniversary.
The ATTS wanted to commemorate that anniversary with a series of cultural events including the publication of this volume, which traces the origins of the rack tramway, initially created as a funicular and modernized in the Thirties, up to the present days.

The volume is enriched with images and drawings (by Stefania Giannitti) and a story of a journey on the funicular railway by Edmondo De Amicis.
