Sassi-Superga rack-tramway, inaugurated in 1884, is one of the three rack systems that are currently working in Italy and it is characterized by some peculiar features. To celebrate its 140th anniversary, ATTS honours its status of authentic historical line by publishing a book, part  of the Association’s series dedicated to the history and technology of Turin’s public transports.

After describing the historical and cultural aspects related to the hill of Superga, the book deals with the detailed history of the local means of transport. The volume goes through the technical evolution of rack rail systems, and it describes the original funicular of Turin, replaced in 1935 by the actual rack-tramway system, in order to analyse its technical sides (the system, the vehicles, the operation).

Together with many images from the past and the present, the book contains a great number of technical designs, a summary table of all the rack-systems in the world and one final gem, an imaginary tale of a trip to Superga by the Italian Writer Edmondo De Amicis.
